A little background on Captain Reuben Blanchard! He was the son of Beza and Prudence Blanchard, was born on August 24, 1794, in Cumberland. He was the eldest of twelve children. Blanchard first left home and went to sea as a common sailor when he was eighteen years old. He was shipwrecked in the first vessel he commanded, The Union, and of the eleven on board, all were lost but himself and the mate.

Soon after this, Blanchard retired and married Christiana, daughter of Solomon Loring of North Yarmouth. He and Christiana had four children together: Enos O., Horatio S., Frederick P., and Francis W. (Photo Courtesy of Prince Memorial Library)
