Last week we featured the Wilson Farm and many noticed a familiar name, Mabel Wilson. We are here to share more about the woman who Cumberland's elementary school is named after!

Mabel I. Wilson (1904-1998) was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Dubuque. While studying at Yale Medical School, she met Melville Morrison Wilson. They married in 1926 and moved to Mel's family home in Cumberland. Mabel taught school in Cumberland and served on the town's school and budget committees before retiring at age 68.

The photo above shows Mabel as she helps break ground for the construction of the Mabel I. Wilson School on Tuttle Road. The school was named after her to honor her commitment and involvement in the local school system. It was ready for occupancy in September of 1967.
