We have reached the end of 2021! While we are all excited as we look forward and begin a bright 2022, we would be remiss not to recognize all that has been accomplished in 2021. It has been a difficult year for everyone. The ongoing global pandemic has challenged us in extraordinary ways. However, we continue to be amazed at the spirit of our community. Throughout the Crier this week, you will find ways in which the Town of Cumberland has continued to move forward in this trying year. We are proud of all our committee members, volunteers, staff and, you, our residents, who have overcome hurdles, big and small, to bring positive change and progress! Below is a glimpse of some highlights:

• We were able to celebrate our historic Bicentennial together and make a fun-filled, sunny memory!
• The Cumberland Fair was back with “Double the Fun in 2021”
• The Historical Society Building moved to its new location
• The Community Food Pantry switched to a “drive-through” and doubled the number of families served
• Town Buildings were outfitted with glass and other safety measures, to keep residents and staff safe
• The Town Council Chambers were renovated to allow for larger meetings and more space during Elections
• The Town and Maine DOT completed improvements to Route 9 and Main Street
• The Town Finance department went paperless, storing their invoices and payroll documents electronically
• The Lands and Conservation Commission’s Recreational Trails subcommittee finalized a permanent easement and constructed a gravel trail from Farwell Avenue to the Greely School Complex
• Our municipal employees embodied their roles as “public servants”, never faltering in the days of this global pandemic. Our Town Hall and Library maintained their standard hours and were creative in ways to provide, and often enhance, their services. Our Police, Fire and EMS and Public Works were the frontline ensuring our entire community was cared for and safe.

We thank you for all your support this past year. We look forward to all that is to come in 2022 and wish you and your families a safe, healthy and Happy New Year!
