Q. How do I register to vote?
A. You must present both proof of identity and residency. A drivers license often will serve as both proof of identity and residency. However, if the address on your drivers license is not current, you will need to provide other proof of address such as a utility bill, checkbook, hunting/fishing license or other bill addressed to you at your current Cumberland address. A social security card or birth certificate may be used as proof of identity.
Q. Where do I vote?
A. The current polling site is located in the Town Council Chambers, Town Hall, 290 Tuttle Road. The town is looking to move the polling location for the November 2008 election. Please stay tuned.
Q. What do I need to get married?
A. Residents of Maine who intend to marry in Maine must record a notice of their intentions in the office of the clerk of the municipality in which at least one of the parties resides. Both the bride and groom must fill out an Intention of Marriage Form and a Record of Social Security Numbers. The marriage license must also be signed in the Town Clerk's office before it can be issued. This license is valid for a period of ninety (90) days from the date the intentions are filed. Out of state residents may file their Notice of Intentions in any municipal office. If either the bride or groom has been previously married, a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate must be presented to the clerk. The cost of the marriage license is $30.
Q. How and where do I get a copy of my vital records?
A. In order for the town of Cumberland to have a copy of a birth, death, or marriage license, the event had to either occur in Cumberland or the person who is the subject of the record must have been a resident of Cumberland at the time of the event. You may obtain copies of these record by mail if you send a written request with the pertinent information detailing the event. Costs for certified documents are $10.00 for the fist copy and $5.00 for each additional copy of the same record.
Q. Where can I bring my old fluorescent light bulbs, computer monitors & printers and microwave ovens?
A. Riverside Recycling for a minimal disposal fee. They are located at 910 Riverside Street in Portland. Their number is 797-6200.
Q. Can I use a credit card to pay my taxes/fees/licenses at the counter at Town Hall?
A. No. The Town offers taxpayers the ability to pay their real estate and property taxes on-line through a third party, Official Payments, jurisdiction code 2920. A 3% fee is assessed to the card-holder if a credit card is used, or a $3.00 fee for an "E-Check".
Q. How do I obtain a burning permit?
A. Burning permits may be obtained at Cumberland Fire Headquarters Monday through Thursday between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm, Fridays from 8:00am to 12:00 noon.
