When David Witherill sailed from Falmouth to the Bahamas, following the East Coast and the Intracoastal Waterway and crossing the Gulf Stream, he went on more than a sailing adventure. He went on a voyage of self discovery and remembrance. On Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland, he’ll share his journey - the physical one and the personal one -using photos and stories.

Witherill’s lecture is based on his book From Sea of Life to Sea of Dreams. He and his wife set sail from Falmouth in September 2012, exploring small and large towns along their route. The book weaves this journey with experiences and entertaining sea stories from Witherill’s career as captain and deck officer in the merchant marine.

Witherill has been around the salt water all of his life, starting at two weeks of age when his father took him for his first sail.  After graduating from Maine Maritime Academy he spent a career at sea as a deck officer including 18 years as master and five as a mooring master.  He and his wife Gail live in Cumberland.

The talk is part of Prince Memorial Library’s monthly lecture series, featuring discussions on a broad range of local topics. It’s free and open to the public. Prince Memorial Library is located at 266 Main Street in Cumberland.
