How can I apply for a building, electrical or plumbing permit?

Applications for building, electrical and plumbing permits are available at the Building Inspector’s office and on the Town website under “Permits & Online Services”. The homeowner or contractor may apply for a building permit. If plumbing is required, you must obtain appropriate permits from the Licensed Plumbing Inspector. A separate electrical permit must be obtained by a licensed electrician or by the owner if the work will be done by the owner.

For building permits, a full set of construction plans showing elevations, section drawings, and/or floor plans may be required. A site plan must be submitted. All construction must meet the 2015 International Residential Code, the 2015 International Building Code as required by MUBEC and the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code.

A Shoreland Zoning Permit is required if construction takes place within the shoreland area; which is within 250′ of a river, lake, stream, or wetland associated with a water body.

A Site Plan Review by the Planning Board or Planning Staff may be required prior to the issuance of a building permit for commercial or non-residential buildings.

A Special Exception may be required by the Board of Adjustment and Appeals, prior to the issuance of a Building Permit or Change of Use Permit.
