                                            COMMUNITY NOTICES

  • Twin Brook Hours - 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.  New Hours beginning April 1st are 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. Any vehicles left in the park after these hours will be ticketed and towed.
  • Town of Cumberland Public Services employee Dan Burr is the 2010 recipient of ECO Maine's Excellence in Recycling Award for his personal efforts in managing the town's new compost facility. CONGRATULATIONS DAN!
  • Believe it or not - the town has received calls of concern related to dogs chasing school buses. This is both a safety hazard for your pet as well as the bus driver and school children riding the bus.
  • A reminder from the Police Chief - Our first responders ask that you place three inch letters on your home, mailbox, or both to aid in their quick and accurate response. These letters should be reflective as well.  Our public safety personnel thank you.
  • With the apparent onset of a spring thaw, the Police Department requests your attention to safe driving and speed limits.  Even the posted speed limits can cause a vehicle to veer unexpectedly, so please drive carefully.

The 2010 U.S. Census is Officially Underway

The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is underway as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. With the process beginning, it is important to be able to recognize official Census employees. The U.S. Census and the Better Business Bureau offered the following advice:

·        If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions.  However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
·        Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information.
·        Do not give your Social Security number, credit card, or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.
·        No matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address.
·        Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. They will never request any information via e-mail.

If you have a question about your participation in the U.S. Census, please contact the Northeast regional office in Boston at (617) 223-3700, and if you have any concern about the person knocking at your door, please contact our police department.

  • Internal Revenue Service Changes Procesing Center For Mainers

With the closure of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) processing center in Andover, Massachusetts, the address for Mainers to send their federal tax reforms has changed. If you are filing a 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ or 1040X form (with or without payment), it should be sent to: Department of the Treasury; Internal Revenue Service; Kansas City, MO 64999.

For information on where to send other forms, visit the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/file/index.html.

  • Moose Permit Lottery Begins

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W) is now taking applications for the 2010 Moose Permit Lottery. IF&W encourages hunters to apply online for permits through its website at http://www5.informe.org/online/moose/. This year, 3,140 permits will be allocated statewide. For the dates of the hunting season in each area, visit http://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting_trapping/hunting/dates_limits_2010.htm.

If, however, an interested hunter is unable to apply online, they may print an application and mail it to IF&W; visit the office in person at 284 State Street in Augusta; or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to IF&W, and department personnel will mail back a paper application. Applications and requests for applications should be sent to: Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 41 SHS, Augusta, ME 04333-0041. Paper applications must be postmarked by April 1.

                                       Cumberland Veterans Monument Committee
                                                   Town of Cumberland, Maine

The Cumberland Veterans Monument Committee is currently in the process of compiling names of Cumberland veterans.  Under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 501(a), "Veteran" means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.  The Committee has accepted a definition of "Veteran" to include any person who served in the active military or reserves and who was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

Links to the data compiled on Cumberland's veterans, including a master list of veterans and separate lists by conflict can be found below and on our homepage.  If you know of an individual who you believe should be included, or have information about any of the veterans listed, please contact the Cumberland Veterans Monument Committee by using the fillable form titled Cumberland Veterans Fillable.pdf.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING CONSTRUCTION WORK ON I-295 AND I-95

The Fire/Rescue Department would like to notify our residents that both I-295 and I-95 will receive considerable construction work over the next two construction seasons.  This work will include grinding of existing pavement and repaving, installation of the new technology cable guard rail system, and bridge work. The majority of this road work will occur during the evening hours of 8:00 pm to 6:00 am.

MDOT has informed us there may be times that exit/entrances to the highways will be completely closed, so please be prepared for alternate routes.  The Presumpscot River Bridge, located between the Falmouth turnpike spur and the West Falmouth toll, will cause a lane reduction and will warrant the closure of the northbound exit from the spur to the turnpike for several months.  The Route 100 bridge over the Presumpscot River in West Falmouth will receive major work starting in the near future and will affect daytime commuters. At some point in the near future, the Martin's Point bridge on Route One will receive construction repairs.

MDOT and MTA are working very closely with the town and our local media to ensure that everyone is well informed of the precise location of each construction project. Our emergency rescue personnel will work very closely with MDOT to minimize ambulance transport delays. The town has been placed on an email notification system so we can keep abreast of construction updates.

We will continue to update you here as information is made available.
